Tangadan Falls, San Gabriel, La Union

by Rizanoia

Everyone that is planning a trip to San Juan will want to take a little detour during their time there to see the magnificent Tangadan Falls in La Union.  There are two tiers for these falls and the water rushes over the tops into the Baroro River below. People can see these waterfalls at any day of the week, but everyone should be prepared for an overwhelming number of visitors to be there on weekends and holidays.

There are a couple of different ways for people to reach Tangadan Falls.  The first is to walk along the Baroro River from Barangay Duplas to the falls.  This walking journey will take approximately an hour, and while it is not difficult, certain spots can be slippery, especially near the massive rocks.  This way will allow everyone to see other waterfalls that are smaller before they reach Tangadan Falls, and some people may choose to dive off the cliffs of those falls before or after they see the main attraction.

The second option visitors have to get to Tangadan Falls is to take a private vehicle to the trailhead and then hike in for approximately twenty minutes until they reach the falls.  A third option involves renting a tricycle to ride in towards the trailhead and then walk the rest of the way to Tangadan Falls. This short hike is quite easy and the views are spectacular as well.

Once people arrive at the falls, they will see the two tiers.  The lower tier is fifty feet from top to bottom and is about one hundred feet wide.  The basin that the water goes into is the perfect place for a little swim. The upper tier does not have such a large drop to its basin, but that pool is much deeper and is perfect for cliff jumping.

Everyone will want to spend time in the water basins under the falls, because the water will feel refreshing after the hike along the trail.  Since the water is deep, some people may feel safer if they rent a life vest for their little swim. As soon as a person is done with the water, but not yet ready to leave the beautiful area, they may want to consider hopping onto one of the bamboo rafts for a break.  This will allow them to still be on the water to enjoy the views and will let them get closer to the falls than many of the other swimmers and jumpers.

No one will want to be near Tangadan Falls and not make a trip to see them, because they will miss out on an adventure of a lifetime.
